Albertico Lescay and Formas will headline

Albertico Lescay, a Cuban trumpet player and pianist of Santiago but now in Havana, is the leader of Formas, an important group in the NuJazz movement in Cuba.   Albertico calls his work Afro NuJazz because Formas retains more Afrocuban elements than many other groups in this part of the spectrum. NuJazz in Cuba is a fusion of Cuban music, Jazz and Hip Hop. The strong Cuban foundations and more intricate Jazz patterns in the music distinguish it from what we once called Acid Jazz in the US, but there are parallels in the mixture of genres. Albertico has played with some of the world's greatest Cuban jazz musicians, such as the grammy-winning pianist Arturo O'Farrill.

Albertico has been in the United States touring with the Afro Yaqui Music Collective, a Pittsburgh based ensemble that brings jazz, funk and soul into dialogue with indigenous musics of the 21st century. Gizelxanath Rodriguez, the lead singer of Yaqui descent, is an acclaimed operatic soprano who has performed over the world including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The band has played at Lincoln Center, colleges throughout the United States, Cuba, and Mexico, playing music that expresses a vision of social change, a change which is gonna come.
